Dr. Dankai Liu | StarGlo Space Systems

Dr. DanKai Liu is the Founder of StarGlo Space Systems and a Senior Consultant at the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). He recently retired from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) after over 36 years of distinguished service, where he served as the Flight System Manager and oversaw the development and operation of flight systems for various critical space missions (including the Mars Curiosity Rover). With extensive experience in space technology and systems engineering, Dr. Liu has been involved in several high-profile missions, ensuring the successful integration and performance of flight systems. In recognition of his outstanding lifelong contributions, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by his alma mater, Tatung University, in May 2026.
Abstract
Mission failures, cost overruns, and schedule delays often stem from weaknesses in systems engineering, including volatile requirements, fragmented communication, poorly defined interfaces, and inconsistent documentation.
This talk argues for a Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)-driven digital transformation toward machine-readable systems engineering, organized around a unified model that serves as the engineering equivalent of a financial ledger: a trusted source of truth for decisions, traceability, and analysis. By providing a shared and consistent representation of the system, this approach can reduce unnecessary misunderstandings among team members.
Using SysML v2 as the enabling framework, this paradigm supports automated workflows, consistency checks, and analytical tools that reduce manual effort, improve communication, and lower the barrier to practical MBSE adoption for engineering teams.
