Prof. Young-Sil Kwak

Bio (Dr. Young-Sil Kwak)
Dr. Young-Sil Kwak is a principal researcher studying space weather at the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) and a professor in the Department of Astronomy and Space Science at the University of Science and Technology (UST). As head of the Space Weather Research Group, she leads KASI’s “Next-Generation Space Weather Research” project. She leads the scientific steering committees of the KASI nano-satellite mission “Small scale magNetosphere and Ionospheric Plasma Experiment (SNIPE)” and a space-borne wide-field auroral/airglow imager “Republic of Korea Imaging Test System (ROKITS)” being developed by KASI.

Dr. Kwak interested in the aeronomy, space weather, and solar-terrestrial environments. In particular, over the past two decades, she has engaged in solving the problem of the ionospheric and upper atmospheric researches using ground-based instruments such as incoherent/coherent scatter radars, satellite measurements such as CHAMP, SWARM, C/NOFS, COSMIC, ICON, SNIPE and so on, and model such as the Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (NCAR/TIEGCM).

Dr. Kwak is currently a vice-president of Korean Space Science Society (KSSS), a member of the board of Korean Astronomy Society (KAS) and of editor of Journal of Astronomy and Space Sciences (JASS). She is also currently Korean National Correspondent of the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA) under the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) and a scientific discipline representative of the Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics (SCOSTEP). She has been also served as a member of scientific organizing committee or local organizing committee or national organizing committee in the several international scientific conferences such as URSI AP-RASC, ICRC, COSPAR, AOGS, and so on. Dr. Kwak was a professional committee member of Presidential Advisory Council on Science and Technology, a member of the board of Institute of Basic Science (IBS), and a member of the board of Korean Woman Scientists and Engineers (KWSE).
